In the Jakobstad region there are 350 refugees and 2300 immigrants with various backgrounds. A cooperation was established in 2010 between the municipalities Jakobstad, Larsmo, Kronoby, Pedersöre and Nykarleby with the goal of focusing on immigration and integration.
Every year the Jakobstad region receives 100 quota refugees and within the region it is agreed upon where it is most appropriate for them to be placed, where there are vacant homes and education opportunities. The integration can be done both in Finnish or in Swedish, depending on the individual's needs and desires.
According to the integration law, services supporting integration should be arranged as part of the basic services provided by the municipality and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment.
The Jakobstad region's model, consisting of five municipalities with one common integration program, a cooperation agreement and one common reception center, is a forerunner. Even if the needs in the different municipalities vary, they all benefit from having the same goal, a common plan and similar ways of realizing it.
The immigration work in the Jakobstad region has been made more effective thanks to a new organization model, new cooperation agreements and more structured networks both for authorities and volunteers.
